Butch James believes Handré Pollard still has a big role to play for the Springboks at next year’s World Cup.
Pollard was instrumental in the Boks’ back-to-back World Cup triumphs in 2019 and 2023, stepping up in the last two semi-finals and finals to kick them to victory.
He has played a bit-part role since, though, due to the emergence of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who has brought a new attacking edge to the Boks’ backline.
James says Pollard’s temperament and experience make him a non-negotiable part of the squad.
“I think Handré Pollard does have a role to play at the World Cup in Australia next year,” the former Bok flyhalf and 10bet ambassador told IOL.
“He’s one of the best if not the best flyhalf South Africa’s ever had. So you’ve got to keep him around. We’ve seen that he can still come on and do the job. Why wouldn’t you want to keep him around? He’s as cool as anything and brings so much experience and knowledge to the team.
“Physically, he still seems to be running around like a young Handré. He’s still got that ability.”
BIG VIC: Boks to play more Tonyball
However, when asked who should start at flyhalf as the Boks evolve their playing style, James was clear.
“Sacha would be my first-choice No 10. If Sacha got injured, I would start with Handré. Then as third choice, I would have Manie Libbok.
“They’re all outstanding options for the jersey.”
