Mossie hails Bok class of 2009

Former centre Jaque Fourie has reflected on an unforgettable 2009 for the Springboks.

Fourie was part of a Bok side that beat the All Blacks three times under coach Peter de Villiers – in Bloemfontein, Durban and Hamilton – on their way to winning the Tri-Nations.

“I think 2009 was an unbelievable year for us,” he said on the Boks Unpacked X The Verdict podcast. “We beat New Zealand three times, and some of us beat them four times, with the Barbarians.

“It was a great experience. As a group, it was an unbelievable year, and it’s one you’ll never forget.”

Fourie – who was voted by South African rugby fans as the best outside centre in SuperSport’s Ultimate Springbok Dream Team – says the fierce rivalry with the All Blacks was a defining feature of his Springbok career.

“It’s always about that rivalry. When you’re playing against them, you have to be at your best. When the final whistle blows and you know you’ve won that game, it’s always special.”

In addition to the treble over the All Blacks, that 2009 team also recorded a 2-1 series win over the British & Irish Lions.

Fourie says one individual moment continues to follow him.

“I think it always comes back to the try against the British & Irish Lions [in the second Test at Loftus] because, wherever you go, that’s what everyone talks about.”
