Brannas in doubt for Bok tour

Stormers and Springbok veteran Deon Fourie looks destined for another stint on the sidelines with what appears to be a serious hamstring injury.

He left the field early after scoring a try in the Stormers’ 52-40 URC win over the Scarlets at Cape Town Stadium last week, having replaced the injured Hacjivah Dayimani.

Skills coach Labeeb Levy confirmed on Tuesday that Fourie had been ruled out of Saturday’s match against Ulster.

“He’s not playing this weekend, that we can guarantee,” he said. “The hamstring is a tricky one. It’s normally four to six weeks, sometimes longer.

“From what I remember of the medical report, an operation wasn’t necessary, which is good, but obviously it needs conservative management and treatment as well as going through all the various rehab protocols.

“But he’s definitely not playing this weekend … and then the re-evaluation process will just take its course.”

OP-ED: Crocked Boks a blessing in disguise

The timing could hardly be worse. Fourie played a key role for the Boks in the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series, delivering an impressive display at hooker while backing up the world’s best No 2, Malcolm Marx.

Rassie Erasmus is expected to name his Bok squad for the Nations Championship this week, with the world champions resuming their campaign against Italy, France and Ireland before the finals weekend at the end of November.

Having played what many thought was his last Test in the 2023 World Cup final, Fourie’s last four appearances for South Africa were wins over the All Blacks after his performances for the Stormers earned him a recall in August.

This after a knee injury, an ankle issue and a serious bicep injury initially raised questions over whether the 40-year-old would play again.
