NZ makes call on Super Rugby’s future

NZ Rugby has decided whether Super Rugby Pacific and the NPC remain the best competitions to support the All Blacks and develop future talent.

The organisation was considering replacing both tournaments with an eight-to-10-team national competition from 2028 as one of three options in a confidential document circulated to stakeholders before last month’s rugby summit in Wellington.

However, NZ Rugby has backed both tournaments following the summit, where it consulted stakeholders on the future direction of the game, including ways to cut costs, attract fans and help teams across the system thrive.

A leaked report had warned that NZ Rugby could lose up to NZ$66-million (R616-million) over the next five years, describing the current model as “clearly unsustainable”. The organisation is also seeking to achieve annual savings of NZ$20-million (R187-million) from 2028.

On Thursday, NZ Rugby said it would work with key stakeholders to transform how Super Rugby Pacific engages fans. It also plans to consolidate rugby operations across New Zealand’s five major cities to streamline player pathways.

The changes are aimed at improving community rugby, high performance and financial outcomes.
