Head coach Sean Everitt has included Duhan van der Merwe in the Edinburgh 23 to face Benetton on Saturday, after the winger was released by Scotland.
Van der Merwe will have another opportunity to build match fitness and press his claims for a place in Scotland’s November Test side when he runs out at No 11 at the Stadio Monigo in round five of the URC this weekend.
He was included in Scotland boss Gregor Townsend’s squad for the second leg of the Nations Championship despite limited game time following an ankle problem.
However, the South African British & Irish Lions star’s comeback against the Lions last week lasted just 18 minutes before he was forced off with a dislocated finger.

“He’s looking well,” Everitt said. “He trained with Scotland early in the week, just like the other internationals. He’ll come up to speed really quickly and he’s excited to get another opportunity. It didn’t last long on Friday night.”
Fellow winger Darcy Graham remains with the national group as he recovers from a calf strain, while flanker Liam McConnell has also been released to Edinburgh.
The Scottish open their Nations Championship campaign against the All Blacks at Murrayfield on 7 November, with the Wallabies and Japan to follow.
