The Stormers could be saddled with another long-term casualty from Saturday’s big win over Ulster, with Evan Roos one of two key players nursing potentially serious injuries.
Roos and winger Leolin Zas limped off either side of half-time with knee injuries during John Dobson’s men’s 33-7 victory at Cape Town Stadium.
The Springbok No 8 produced a solo effort early in the second half to score one of the hosts’ five tries before being replaced by Wandile Mlaba in the 56th minute.
RECAP: Stormers close home run on a high
“It looks like a medial ligament injury, but he hasn’t been scanned yet. It could be serious, but it’s not an ACL,” Stormers boss John Dobson said post-match.
“It could be six weeks, it could be a month, but it could be a pretty serious injury.”
The Stormers were already dealt a blow before kick-off when Bongi Mbonambi, named on the bench after rejoining the club this week, was ruled out and replaced by debutant Altus Rabe.
Mbonambi was expected to provide a boost amid a hooker crisis. André-Hugo Venter, Deon Fourie, Lukhanyo Vokozela, Almero Keizer and Luca Bakkes are all injured, while JJ Kotzé is suspended.
“I couldn’t believe it. I was so proud of our efforts as a collective to get Bongi in here within 24 hours,” Dobson said. “Then he comes to me at the captain’s run and says his hamstring is sore. I said, ‘Man, it’s not, go back out there on the field! [laughs]’
“He hasn’t played for a long time and we didn’t want him to tear it. So he’ll be back; he could play next week. It was precautionary.”
REPORT: Bulls finish strong to subdue Scarlets
Dobson also shed light on the 11-cap BJ Dixon’s struggles with delayed concussion symptoms, saying “it’s not something you mess around with”.
However, the head coach is optimistic that Dixon, along with fellow loose forwards Keke Morabe and Ruan Ackermann, and Cheslin Kolbe, should be back in December.
“Zassy also picked up some sort of knee injury, so Chessie is going to be very important,” Dobson added.
The URC heads into a four-week break after this weekend’s round-five fixtures and when it resumes, the Stormers face the Sharks at Kings Park on 5 December.
