USA’s ‘Captain South Africa’ still upbeat

Captain Marno Redelinghuys insists there is plenty of quality in the USA Eagles squad despite another heavy defeat to Australia A.

The former Western Province and Stormers flank led the USA XV in Friday night’s 52-0 loss in New Jersey, six days after the Americans had suffered a 61-12 defeat in Nashville.

Redelinghuys was one of five South Africans involved, with former Junior Bok David Coetzer starting at fullback, Wayne van der Bank in midfield and Ruben de Haas at scrumhalf. Former Junior Boks centre Dan Kriel, twin brother of Jesse, came off the bench.

“It’s disappointing. Obviously we put in a lot of hard work during the week,” Redelinghuys told the match broadcaster. “We wanted to come out and make the fans proud out there.

“I think we created a few opportunities, we just couldn’t convert any tries or points.

“We need to go and have a hard look at ourselves and see what we can fix and what we can do better because I know the quality in the team is there, we just need to figure it out and get the best out of us.”

Australia A, featuring several capped Wallabies, raced into a 33-0 half-time lead before completing another emphatic victory.

Despite the result, Redelinghuys praised the local support.

“Especially in our home country, it’s amazing having these people here. It always helps a little bit out there on the field so we love it.”

The Eagles will look to bounce back when they face Hong Kong in the Nations Cup on 8 November, followed by Tests against Romania and Georgia.
