Kyle Steyn will start for Scotland against the All Blacks at Murrayfield on Saturday, but there’s no room for fellow South African wing Duhan van der Merwe.
Steyn will earn his 36th Test cap for his adopted country on the right wing. Van der Merwe started on the left wing in Scotland’s last outing against Fiji in July, but won’t have the chance to add to his tally of 35 tries in 54 Tests.
Record Scotland try-scorer Darcy Graham has also missed out, with Steyn on the right wing and Jamie Dobie on the left. Kyle Rowe is preferred to Blair Kinghorn at fullback.
Huw Jones returns to the starting lineup after missing the July leg of the Nations Championship and will partner captain Sione Tuipulotu in midfield.
Finn Russell and Ben White form the halfback combination.
TEAM: All Blacks go strong for Scots
In the pack, Rory Sutherland, Ewan Ashman and Zander Fagerson make up the front row, with Scott Cummings and Gregor Brown at lock. Matt Fagerson, Rory Darge and Jack Dempsey complete the loose trio.
Townsend has opted for a six-two split on the bench, with South African loosehead prop Pierre Schoeman joined by fellow forwards Gregor Hiddleston, Will Hurd, Max Williamson and Josh Bayliss, while George Horne, Tom Jordan and Kinghorn provide backline cover.
Scotland are still searching for their first victory over the All Blacks, having failed to win any of their previous 33 encounters. Their only positive results were draws in 1964 and 1983.
