Head coach Rassie Erasmus provided news on Salmaan Moerat after the Springbok lock was a late withdrawal ahead of Saturday’s demolition job of Italy in Turin.
Moerat, who was set to make his first Test appearance of 2026, was replaced in the starting XV by Lood de Jager – his spot on the bench was taken by fellow World Cup winner Franco Mostert.
The Boks beat Italy 66-7 at Allianz Stadium to remain unbeaten following four matches in the Nations Championship.

“Salmaan’s got back spasms,” Erasmus told reporters post-match in the north-west of Italy. “He had a little bit yesterday [on Friday], but on Thursday we thought it would clear up, and he looked good at the captain’s run.
“But unfortunately in the warm-up, he got more back spasms. So hopefully it’s not too serious.
“But ja, he’s the only casualty we had in the game. I don’t think there are any other serious injuries.”
The world champions will now refocus for next Friday’s clash against France at the Stade de France in Paris, which is followed by a trip to Dublin to face Ireland a week later.
