A New Public-Private Partnership Promises a Brighter Future for Ugandans
An exciting new partnership brings the tools and opportunities to make young dreams come true
For many young Ugandans, dreams of the future die far too early. But now there is hope. A new collaboration between Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development (MGLSD) and Asante Africa Foundation is paving the way for proven community-based educational, health, social and economic programs. By leveraging the strength of both entities, partnership will empower youth to reach their career aspirations.
About the Agreement
This partnership was formed through a Memorandum of Understanding with the MGLSD and Asante Africa Foundation for five years with an extension option. The formal partnership will spur collaboration on a framework of initiatives to benefit the communities where Asante Africa works. The government’s goals include promoting gender equity and women’s empowerment, increase and decent labour productivity as well as stable industrial relations. It will also enhance income security, improve the performance of the ministry and mobilise communities for national development. Asante Africa Foundation’s goals include promoting its school- and community-based program models that empower children and youth, strengthen government partnerships between ministries, departments and agencies at all levels, and expand its revenue base through external donor funding to support the sustainability of the programs and expand their reach.
Asante Africa Foundation Success Stories
In the village of Nyarukoma, Charles and Chance are growing businesses through Asante Africa Foundation’s Youth Livelihood Program and its Community Learning Group. Unable to pay the fees, Charles was forced to drop out of school in 2017. He turned to farming maize to support himself and his family. But his ambitions were for much more. Thanks to the opportunities and skills he gained through the Community Learning Group, he has expanded his produce business to include maize, coffee, dry cassava and more. And even though he earned a certificate from the Youth Livelihood program, he continues attending entrepreneurship programs, where he has important group support even while expanding his knowledge.
Chance is a young single mother who left school to become a tailor. With the support and skills she has received through Asante Africa Foundation Community Learning Groups, she is learning how to better handle her customers and promote her business. Equally important, she says, she is regaining the hope that she has lost due to the challenges of her life. Her dream is to transform her retail business to a wholesale enterprise and replace her manual sewing machines with electric models.
