Despite the immense excitement within the Megacy for AKA‘s sneaker, not everyone embraced the announcement without questioning the motives behind it. In a recent social media exchange, Reebok South Africa addressed concerns raised by a fan regarding the use of the late South African rapper AKA’s name and legacy with the sneaker release.
The Instagram user voiced their concerns by stating, “It’s insane how people are still using his name and fan base to continue making money. Let Super Mega rest in peace for real. Y’all can block me if you like. But this is just…”
In response, Reebok SA swiftly clarified their intentions, assuring the Megacy and everyone involved that they are not aiming to profit from the rapper’s legacy. “100% of the proceeds are going to The Kiernan Forbes Foundation and AKA’s daughter, Kairo; our goal is to honour, not profit,” Reebok stated.
Although some view the release of AKA’s SneAKA 2.0 as a money-making scheme by the sneaker brand, it’s important to note that the deal between Reebok and AKA was established before his passing. Therefore, the sneaker’s release aligns with the rapper’s vision rather than contradicting his will.
AKA’s mother, Lynn Forbes, clarified that the Forbes family was fully aware of Kiernan’s relationship with Reebok despite the backlash their son had with the brand. The release of SneAKA 2.0 serves as a way to honour his wishes and preserve his legacy, particularly for his daughter, Kairo.
“I know for a fact that Kiernan was okay with Reebok by the time we lost him. As long as we take this on board and make it a real celebration of Kiernan. It’s something that Kairo can look back on in years to come and say wow what a beautiful tribute, what a beautiful celebration of my dad,” Lynn Forbes said.
