International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the incredible achievements of women worldwide and recognize the challenges they continue to face. In the nonprofit sector, especially in Africa, women have been at the forefront of driving meaningful change, particularly in education. These inspiring leaders are breaking barriers, empowering communities, and ensuring that future generations have access to the knowledge and tools they need to thrive. Today, we highlight the remarkable women at Asante Africa Foundation who are leading initiatives to transform education across East Africa—demonstrating how their vision and dedication are shaping a brighter future for all.

Florence’s Story: From Maasai Roots to Youth Empowerment
Florence Thomas, Country Manager Tanzania
Born into the Maasai community of Tanzania, Florence learned early on the transformative power of education, particularly as many young girls faced significant barriers to learning. Her father, a dedicated community leader, instilled in her a strong sense of service, shaping her commitment to helping others. With a deep passion for education, she pursued her studies and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education. Florence later began her career as a teacher in Singida, where she quickly realized the critical importance of mentorship and leadership development for young people.
Her journey then led her to GLAMI, where she worked as a Programs Mentor for Girls, supporting over 700 girls in acquiring essential life skills and leadership training. Following that, she joined the Asante Africa Foundation as a Regional Coordinator, where she had the privilege of leading impactful projects, including a notable partnership with the FAO. Her contributions led to a promotion to Program Lead, and in 2024, after serving as Interim Country Manager, she was honored to be confirmed as the Country Manager for Asante Africa Foundation, Tanzania.
Through these experiences, Florence has witnessed firsthand how education can break the cycles of poverty and empower young people to lead their communities. Her vision is to build a Tanzania where every child, particularly girls, has the opportunity to thrive. She is passionate about traveling, learning, and connecting with like-minded individuals to foster lasting change.
Inspired by the lessons of her father and fueled by her belief in the potential of young people, Florence remains deeply committed to empowering the next generation of leaders and nurturing strong, resilient communities.

Deborah’s Story – Championing Education and Gender Equality
Deborah Namugenyi, Country Manager Uganda
Deborah’s journey as an educator and advocate is rooted in her deep commitment to creating lasting change. Growing up in Uganda, she witnessed the harsh impact of limited access to quality education, particularly for girls, often forced into early marriage or domestic labor due to poverty and societal expectations. This sparked her drive for change.
Her educational path reflects incredible perseverance. After earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Post Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education, Deborah vowed to use education as a tool for empowerment. As an educator, she saw firsthand how education could uplift individuals and transform entire communities. Her advocacy soon focused on gender equality and sustainable livelihoods.
At Asante Africa Foundation, Deborah played a key role as Program Coordinator and Manager, Uganda, championing education and girls’ empowerment. Her tireless work has ensured that many young women now have the chance to pursue their dreams.
As Country Manager at Asante Africa Foundation Uganda, Deborah continues to fight for expanded access to education, particularly for girls. Her dedication to education and gender equality is changing lives, building a brighter future, and empowering generations to come.

Ruth’s Journey of Resilience, Purpose, and Impact
Ruth Waweru, Global Director of Finance and Administration
Ruth’s journey from Limuru village, Kenya, to becoming the Global Director of Finance and Administration at Asante Africa Foundation is one of resilience and purpose. Growing up, Ruth faced numerous challenges, including walking 30 minutes each day to catch transportation to school. Despite this, her father’s encouragement fueled her academic excellence, teaching her the value of kindness and hard work.
Ruth’s path was far from easy. While pursuing her dream of becoming an accountant, Ruth became a mother during university, balancing motherhood, academics, and a difficult relationship. Balancing the demands of motherhood, academics, and a difficult personal relationship, Ruth demonstrated extraordinary resilience. Her determination led her to graduate with strong grades and later join PricewaterhouseCoopers.
However, Ruth’s true calling lay in making a difference in her community. She found that purpose at Asante Africa Foundation, where her financial skills could fuel her passion for social impact. Ruth has seen firsthand how education can transform lives, especially in underserved regions like Samburu, where children face poverty and insecurity. Through the foundation, she has witnessed students attend Enterprise competitions and start their own businesses, reinforcing her belief in the power of education to create change.
Ruth’s work extends beyond her professional accomplishments. As a strong advocate for women’s empowerment, she believes in providing women the resources and support to succeed. Her story highlights the transformative power of resilience, determination, and the pursuit of systemic change for a more inclusive world.
