Ackers to take charge of Bulls’ Currie Cup side

Johan Ackermann will step into the role of head coach of the Vodacom Bulls’ Currie Cup team from next week.

It’s part of a plan to give players much-needed game time ahead of the Bulls’ 2025-26 Vodacom URC campaign, which kicks off on 27 September with a match against Ospreys at Loftus.

Ackermann takes over from Currie Cup head coach Phiwe Nomlomo, in a similar move to the Lions, who will be led by URC head coach Ivan van Rooyen for the remainder of the Currie Cup alongside Mzwakhe Nkosi.

The Bulls began their Currie Cup campaign with two big wins, but since losing several players to the URC training squad have suffered three defeats and are sixth on the log.

Nomlomo on Friday named a team with four new inclusions and two positional switches for Saturday’s match against the Lions at Ellis Park.

TEAM: Bulls reshuffle front row, backline

“This is the first weekend that we’ve made only a handful of changes, which is good for cohesion,” he said. “It will also be the last outing for this group in the league phase. Next week, Johan will step in and take charge to give our URC squad players game time.”

Nomlomo added that while the Bulls’ Currie Cup campaign has been far from ideal, it has served an important purpose.

“We’ve given opportunities to 17 junior players and five club players,” he said. “It’s helped us build depth and see players in action that otherwise might never have been tested at this level. Some of them have impressed.”
