Advancing the Whole Child Model in Arusha

Advancing the Whole Child Model in Arusha

For many children in rural Tanzania, success in school depends on more than classroom instruction. Health challenges, limited learning resources, and social pressures can affect attendance, engagement, and long-term learning outcomes.

To address these barriers, Asante Africa Foundation and School-to-School International (STS) are partnering to advance the Whole Child Model in Arusha, Tanzania. The initiative engages more than 500 students through school-based programs, strengthening learning, student well-being and community engagement. The Whole Child Model recognizes that children thrive when education, health and community support work together to create safe and supportive learning environments.

Supporting Learning, Well-Being and Leadership

At the center of the initiative is Asante Africa Foundation’s Wezesha Vijana Program (WVP), a school-based program that supports both academic development and student well-being.

Teachers receive training in child-centered and participatory teaching methods that help make lessons more engaging and effective. At the same time, students participate in activities that strengthen confidence, communication and leadership skills while reinforcing learning in the classroom.

The program also supports students’ health and well-being. Girls receive menstrual hygiene products and health education to help reduce barriers to consistent attendance, while boys participate as allies, to help foster supportive and gender-equitable school environments.

Through school-based clubs, students participate in a 16-session asset-based curriculum that develops personal, social, health, and financial skills. These student-led spaces help young people strengthen communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities while building confidence and self-agency.

Students also take part in pay-it-forward activities, mentoring peers, tutoring younger learners, and leading small community initiatives that extend the program’s impact beyond the classroom.

Engaging Families and Communities

Parent workshops and community discussions reinforce the importance of education, gender equity, and youth participation. Teachers, community leaders, and the Arusha District Education Office collaborate in program planning and implementation, helping ensure activities align with local priorities and strengthen community ownership.

A Shared Commitment to Holistic Education

School-to-School International’s Whole Child Model recognizes that children thrive when education, health, and community engagement are addressed together. Through this partnership, Asante Africa Foundation contributes deep local experience in youth development and community engagement, while STS brings research-driven approaches and global expertise in strengthening education systems.

Together, these complementary strengths create supportive learning environments where children can learn, grow, and lead.

Looking Ahead

By strengthening teaching practices, supporting student health, and engaging families and communities, the partnership advances a holistic approach to education in rural Tanzania. As students build stronger academic foundations and leadership skills, the initiative contributes to more resilient schools and communities across Arusha.
