AKA’s Former Business Partner Benza Reveals “Phumakim” As His Favourite Cassper Song. South African music executive and culture investor Raphael Benza, widely known as Benza, has sparked conversation in the local hip-hop scene with candid remarks about one of Cassper Nyovest’s early signature tracks.
In a recent interview with SA Hip Hop Mag, Benza named Cassper’s 2014 hit “Phumakim” from the album Tsholofelo as his personal favourite in the rapper’s catalogue. His revelation comes years after the passing of Cassper’s longtime rival, the late AKA (Kiernan Forbes).
“My favourite song of Cassper is the worst. I can say it now that AKA is not here, it’s ‘Phumakim’,” Benza stated.
Produced in collaboration with Brian Soko, “Phumakim” became a street anthem for Cassper, blending high-energy beats with confident bars that cemented his rise in the mid-2010s. The track gained attention during a period when the rivalry between Cassper and AKA shaped much of South African hip-hop, with subtle and overt disses exchanged in lyrics and interviews.
In addition, Benza stated that he desired to have worked on that song under his boutique. “I wish I worked on that song. I would’ve deleted the AKA part,” he admitted.
His comment references the verses in “Phumakim” where Cassper addressed AKA directly amid their highly publicised conflict. The feud was a defining narrative in SA hip-hop, driving competition that elevated both artists while dividing fans. AKA’s passing in 2023 prompted widespread reflection and tributes, including from Cassper himself in later interviews.
Benza, who played a pivotal role in shaping AKA’s early career through Vth Season and nearly signed Cassper, has remained vocal about the legacies of both artists. His latest remarks highlight a producer’s perspective: he appreciates the song’s cultural impact while acknowledging how personal rivalries influenced the final product.
