In a deeply personal and emotional conversation on the Ikigai Awakening Podcast, Lynn Forbes — the mother of the late South African rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes — opened up about the lessons grief has taught her and what, in hindsight, she wishes she could have done differently in the wake of her son’s passing.
Lynn, who has long been admired for her strength and generosity, revealed that the loss of AKA pushed her into one of the most challenging emotional periods of her life.
“What grief has taught me is that you need to be in the moment. I am a giver and I have given so much to people — whether my children or Kairo — I have always been the giver. And I think a lot of people struggled with a version of me that was in need,” she said.
Reflecting on her own capacity during that painful period, Lynn admitted that while she wanted to be fully present for her son in his final months, her emotional reserves were depleted.
“I think I probably wasn’t there for my son the way I needed to be. I was in so much pain. You can’t pour from an empty cup because my cup was empty. Not that I didn’t want to, but I didn’t have capacity. The one person I needed to show up for was my son because he had the same deep grief.”
Despite her self-criticism, Lynn acknowledged that she did the best she could under the circumstances.
“I could only do what I could do, and when you go through this, you can only do what you can do,” she added.
The candid moment offered fans and listeners a rare glimpse into the complexities of grief — particularly for those who must navigate their own heartbreak while trying to support the ones they love.
