Argentina eyes World Cup history

A bold new chapter in rugby’s global story could be on the horizon, and it starts in South America.

The Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) has confirmed it is exploring a bid to host the 2035 World Cup, with ambitions to bring the sport’s biggest showpiece to the continent for the very first time.

Discussions are already underway, with World Rugby CEO Alan Gilpin currently visiting Argentina as part of the early evaluation process.

But this is not just a national bid.

Argentina is looking at a multi-country hosting model, potentially involving Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.

UAR president Gabriel Travaglini says the vision goes far beyond rugby.

“The 2035 bid represents a federal objective and a legacy project that transcends our borders,” he said.

“Welcoming Alan Gilpin to advance this technical analysis is a fundamental step in demonstrating that the region is ready.

“We want a World Cup that reflects the passion and development that rugby has achieved in every corner of our territory.”

Argentina’s push comes as interest in hosting the tournament heats up globally.

Japan –hosts of the groundbreaking 2019 edition – have already signalled their intention to bid again, setting up what could become a fierce race for hosting rights.

In the meantime, the World Cup roadmap is locked in, with Australia set to host the next tournament, before USA takes over in 2031.
