Asake speaks on why he chooses Yoruba as his global sound

Asake has finally explained why his global rise is rooted firmly in the Yoruba language.

Afrobeats star Asake is reinforcing his global rise with a firm commitment to the culture that shaped him.

In a new interview with ESSENCE, the chart-topping singer opened up about why Yoruba remains the heart of his music, even as his audience expands across continents.

Asake said that while he can communicate and sing in English, using Yoruba allows him to tell his story with complete honesty. According to him, the language carries the experiences, emotions, and upbringing that define his artistry.

“It’s not like I can’t communicate in English,” he explained. “I can talk to the whole world in English or even sing in English. But because my music is based on my own story and the things that shaped me, I’m more comfortable saying it in Yoruba.”

His stance reflects a broader movement among Nigerian artists who are finding that global listeners connect deeply with authenticity, regardless of language.

Asake also kept fans guessing about his upcoming album, Money. When asked about the project, he refused to give any details, saying he wants listeners to experience it without spoilers. “Telling you about the project takes away from what I want you to feel,” he said. “I’d rather you wait for the album, listen, and then tell me how you feel.”

The singer’s decision to protect the mystery around Money has fueled anticipation, with fans eagerly waiting for what promises to be another defining moment in his career.
