Bayer Leverkusen have terminated the contract of former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag with immediate effect with less than four months in charge.
The Bundesliga club confirmed the news of Erik Ten Hag’s termination on its official website on Monday, September 1, 2025. According to reports from the club, the decision was harsh but they needed to take action going into the rest of the campaign.
The statement read,
“Bayer 04 Leverkusen have parted ways with head coach Erik ten Hag. This was decided by the shareholders’ committee, the club’s supervisory body, on the recommendation of the management of Bayer 04. Training will be overseen by the current backroom staff on an interim basis.”
The club director Simon Rolfes also said,
“Nobody wanted to take this step, However, the past few weeks have shown that building a new and successful team with this set-up is not feasible.”
Why did Bayer Leverkusen sack Erik Ten Hag?
Bayer Leverkusen decided to sack Erik Ten Hag after they secured just one point in their opening two games. They lost the opening game 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim and drew 3-3 at 10-man Werder Bremen on Saturday, having led 2-0 and 3-1.
Ten Hag signed a two-year contract to succeed Xabi Alonso as head coach in May after the Spaniard, who led Leverkusen to a league and cup double in 2023-24, was appointed Real Madrid manager as a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti.
Ten Hag is the latest former Manchester United manager to get sacked after Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Jose Mourinho were also sacked at Besiktas and Fenerbahçe respectively.
