Benza Reveals AKA’s “The World Is Yours” Music Video Cost R275,000. In a recent conversation with SA Hip Hop Mag, industry veteran and Vth Season founder Benza (Raphael Benza) opened up about one of South African hip-hop’s most ambitious music video projects. He spoke about AKA’s 2017 visual for “The World Is Yours” and the scale that set it apart at the time.
Benza revealed that the video was made on a budget of R275,000, which he considered the largest ever for a local hip-hop production. “The World Is Your video. Back then, I thought that was the biggest budget, which was 275,000. I think it was the biggest budget,” he told the magazine.
The production took place in the tropical paradise of Thailand, specifically Phuket, as noted in the video’s credits. During his “Supa Mega” era, AKA transformed what started as a romantic getaway with his partner, Bonang Matheba, into a full-scale production. The director, a small crew of two or three people, and Bonang herself were all flown in for the shoot, with Bonang making a memorable cameo.
Benza recounted the confidence he felt after hearing the demo for the track. “The first time I had the demo of The World Is Yours, I thought this is our song. We’re going to make back the R275,000. We’re going to make the money back because the song is that good. It has to have a video that looks as good as it.” His optimism proved correct. The investment paid off quickly, with Benza estimating that the project recouped its costs three to four times over through streams, views, brand exposure, and the song’s lasting popularity.
Directed by Alessio Bettocchi alongside AKA and executive producer Prince Costinyo, the video was released in early 2017 under Sony Music Entertainment Africa and Vth Season. It featured luxurious poolside scenes, beach settings, and high-energy moments that reflected the track’s triumphant and aspirational lyrics. The video amassed hundreds of thousands of views in its first weeks and remains a benchmark for South African artists competing on a global stage.
Benza’s reflections highlight a defining moment in SA hip-hop history, when bold creativity, international production, and strategic vision turned a hit song into a cultural milestone. Nearly ten years later, “The World Is Yours” continues to demonstrate that investing in quality and believing in the music can generate rewards far beyond the initial spend.
