Bheki Cele Sets The Record Straight On Purported Handshake Snub By AKA’s Father. Police veteran Bheki Cele has moved to clear the air about a viral courtroom clip that has long fueled claims he was snubbed by the late rapper AKA’s father, Tony Forbes.
Speaking during the Ad Hoc Committee about his role in the high-profile murder case, Cele said the optics were misleading and that he and Forbes had already spent the morning together before the hearing.
According to Bheki Cele, the pair flew from Cape Town to Johannesburg on the same flight and agreed to link up again at court. He said that is why there was no need for a second greeting on camera when Forbes walked over to shake KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s hand. Cele added that he maintained regular communication with the family during the investigation, often checking for updates he could share.
The clarification targets a short clip that trended widely in South Africa, showing Forbes greeting Mkhwanazi while Cele appeared to be bypassed. That video resurfaced in July 2025 and reignited debate about relations between the family and the former minister. Some outlets later noted that an alternate angle appeared to show a greeting between Cele and Forbes, complicating the internet narrative.
Cele also revisited criticism that he did not rush to the Durban scene on the night Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane were killed on Florida Road on 10 February 2023. He has previously said there was “no need” for him to attend because he was coordinating with the KwaZulu-Natal team and staying in touch with the family, a stance that drew mixed public reactions at the time.
On the grind of the case itself, Cele described the investigation as unusually difficult, with detectives often feeling close to a breakthrough that slipped away. That frustration mirrors the public’s mood two years after the assassination, a period marked by viral clips, courtroom flashpoints, and intense scrutiny of police leadership.
The handshake moment became a lightning rod for that scrutiny, even as new footage and context suggested a more mundane explanation than the initial social media storyline.
