Blitzboks rule the world

The Blitzboks have been crowned overall champions of the SVNS Series after edging Fiji in the final of the New York tournament.

The 10-7 victory secured both the gold medal in New York and the overall series title for coach Philip Snyman’s Blitzboks, who added the latest crown to their earlier triumphs in Cape Town, Perth and Vancouver.

It capped a superb season for South Africa, who have now finished on the podium in all six tournaments of the campaign.

Blitzboks captain Impi Visser, playing in his 50th tournament on the global circuit, set the tone early in the final.

The inspirational skipper first stole possession from Fiji before showing his vision to send Gino Cupido racing away for the opening try.

Tristan Leyds then added a second score to stretch South Africa’s advantage before Terio Veilawa hit back for Fiji to set up a tense finish.

But the Blitzboks’ defence held firm as they closed out a famous victory to secure the title.

After South Africa won their seventh final on US soil, Sevens Player of the Final Selvyn Davids praised the team’s resilience.

“What a performance.

“We stuck to our guns because we knew Fiji were going to be physical, but thankfully we came out on top.”

Visser also hailed the team’s defensive effort after lifting the trophy.

“It was a massive defensive effort and testament to all our hard work.

“We couldn’t have scripted it any better and we’re just thankful we came up with the win.”
