The messages, which began circulating widely through Freshman Mag, captured Blxckie in an unfiltered mood as he reacted to a hip hop mix on 5FM. His first post delivered a harsh verdict on what he was hearing, describing it as the worst mix he had ever encountered.
In a series of follow-up posts, Blxckie dismissed what he called “culture” conversations in the scene, criticising nostalgia and so-called OG perspectives as outdated and stale. He went further, calling out artists who gain brief momentum and then feel entitled to speak recklessly without accountability, rejecting the idea that such behaviour should be excused as criticism or advice.
Although Speedsta was never mentioned by name, the reference to 5FM and the context made the target clear. Screenshots of the statuses spread rapidly, fuelling conversations across South African hip hop platforms. The tension traces back to last year when Blxckie declined invitations to appear on Speedsta’s 5FM show. Speedsta interpreted the move as a slight against both the platform and the culture he represents, later questioning Blxckie’s impact during 2025.
Blxckie pushed back, framing Speedsta’s stance as gatekeeping rooted in outdated thinking. The veteran DJ has previously found himself at odds with younger talent, including public disagreements with Nasty C over production credits. He has consistently positioned himself as a custodian of traditional hip hop values, emphasising legacy, structure, and respect for the groundwork laid by earlier generations.
Adding another layer to the situation, the current tension intersects with Blxckie’s recent friction with LucasRaps. Speedsta recently hosted LucasRaps on his show, where subtle jabs were perceived to be directed at Blxckie and his circle, setting the stage for the latest outburst.
At its core, the dispute reflects a broader generational divide within South African hip hop. Emerging artists continue to push for innovation and freedom of expression, while established figures stress the importance of heritage, radio influence, and paying dues.
