Nick Hatton’s rise in Durban hasn’t gone unnoticed and he’s caught the eye of one of the most respected captains in Springbok history.
Former Sharks and Springbok skipper Gary Teichmann believes Hatton’s biggest strength has nothing to do with size or stats, but everything to do with how deeply he cares about the game.
“Nick is first and foremost absolutely passionate about the game,” Teichmann told Rapport. “It shines through in the way he plays. In addition, he’s not only extremely dedicated, but he’s incredibly talented.”

Teichmann, who captained the Sharks to back-to-back Currie Cup titles in 1995 and 1996 and later served as CEO of the union, says those qualities have fast-tracked the 23-year-old into leadership roles at franchise level.
Hatton has enjoyed the full backing of the Sharks’ brain trust, captaining the side in the Currie Cup two seasons ago and later leading them in the Investec Champions Cup against heavyweight opposition such as Toulouse and the Sale Sharks.

For Hatton, the respect goes both ways, even if their playing careers never overlapped.
Although he wasn’t yet born when Teichmann led the Springboks to their first Tri-Nations title in 1998, Hatton says he values the opportunity to learn from the former Bok captain.
“Although I was too young to see him play in person, I’ve been privileged to get to know him later on,” said Hatton. “Teich is a great guy to talk to about the game.”
