Bok powerhouse bolsters Lions

A Springbok prop will play for the Lions from the 2026-27 season.

The Joburg-based franchise announced on Monday that Boan Venter will join them from Edinburgh in July 2026.

Venter has agreed to return to South Africa after six seasons in Scotland, where he established himself as one of the most reliable loosehead props in the Vodacom URC.

Having initially planned to qualify to represent Scotland, Venter made his Springbok debut in July, scoring a try in a commanding win over Georgia in Nelspruit. He went on to earn eight Test caps, featuring prominently in victories against Argentina in Durban, France in Paris and Ireland in Dublin.

STATE OF THE URC: SA rivals brace for brutal derbies

The 28-year-old began his professional career with the Cheetahs before moving to Edinburgh in 2020. Since then, he has accumulated 94 caps for the Scottish club, developing into a durable and consistent front-row presence known for his work rate, physicality and scrummaging stability.

His arrival will significantly bolster the Lions’ pack, where he is set to link up with fellow Springbok forwards Asenathi Ntlabakanye and Ruan Venter, while adding further Test experience to a squad that already includes Morne van den Berg and Quan Horn.
