Dawie: Stormers must fix finishing

Attack coach Dawie Snyman says the Stormers must be more clinical after leaving points out on the park against the Dragons.

The Stormers created numerous scoring chances in their 29-21 Vodacom URC win at Cape Town Stadium but poor execution kept the Welsh side in the game.

“We created a lot of opportunities,” said Snyman on Tuesday. “It’s similar to the Bulls game at home a few weeks ago. It’s just our options, our skill execution and timing that we need to fix.”

Importantly, Snyman sees that as a positive rather than a concern.

“The encouraging thing is that we are creating those chances. You don’t want to sit after a game and not know where your opportunities are coming from.”

He echoed what Stormers captain Ruhan Nel said post-match: “We just weren’t accurate enough, but also it’s encouraging for us. I’d rather sit here with 10 opportunities missed than one created the whole game.”

Snyman, meanwhile, credited the forward pack for laying the platform, with the Stormers scrum particularly dominant against the Dragons.

“The set-piece has been massive for us. Credit to the players, they put in the hard work every week. It gives the backs time and space, and now it’s on us to reward that effort by making the right decisions.”

Looking ahead to their next encounter, Snyman warned against reading too much into Edinburgh’s heavy 54-17 defeat to the Lions in Joburg.

“We all know going up there is not easy, especially for them coming from a winter scenario where you go to altitude and it’s quite fast,’ he said.

“The Lions had a good start and really played well, but we know it’s an Edinburgh side that will be tough here on Saturday night. They are a quality side with world-class players and they’ll be a big challenge.”

Snyman warned that the Stormers would not be able to keep getting away with leaving points out on the field.

“If you don’t take your chances against a team like Edinburgh, they will put you under pressure,” he said. “It’s small things we need to fix, but important ones.”
