Dewies: WP must learn on the run

Western Province backline coach Dewaldt Duvenage insists there’s still everything to play for as his side heads to Bloemfontein for a crunch Currie Cup clash against the Cheetahs.

PREVIEW: Three-way tie ignites Currie Cup title race

Winless after three rounds and rooted to the bottom of the log, Province’s playoff hopes hang by a thread. Yet, with just one point separating the top six sides, Duvenage believes a semi-final spot remains within reach – provided they deliver in the Free State on Saturday.

“We’re not far away,” said the former WP scrumhalf.

“Cohesion comes with time and hopefully we’ll start seeing some benefits from this weekend. We have improved, we’re learning every day, but we have to learn quicker and find answers faster.”

Province have shown flashes of promise, but have struggled to produce a complete 80-minute performance. Duvenage says they will continue to back their attacking approach despite recent setbacks.

“We pride ourselves on our attack. The main challenge [in this campaign] has been getting everyone on the same page. We’re not getting that 80-minute performance together yet. After the first game we needed to improve our set-piece and discipline, which we did in the second game. But then last week at the breakdown we suffered against Griquas.”

A key factor in that defeat was the early loss of captain Zain Davids to a knee injury in Kimberley, which left Province vulnerable at the breakdown. The loose forward faces a fitness test on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury and how long he’ll be sidelined for.
