Nigerian music video director, Praise Onyeagwalam, popularly known as Director Pink, has shared the difficult experiences that led her to abandon her acting dreams and pursue a career behind the camera.
In a recent interview with Hip TV, the award-winning cinematographer revealed that she left Nollywood after enduring humiliation, exploitation, and inappropriate advances during auditions in her early days.
“I wanted to be an actress, but the humiliation was too much. Long queues, shady ‘come to this location’ calls, I said no. That’s when I chose to be my own boss,” she recounted.
Director Pink explained that the switch from acting to directing came from frustration but eventually became a blessing in disguise. According to her, filmmaking offered creative freedom and self-respect that she never found in acting.
“I realized I could still be in the entertainment space without compromising my values,” she said. “Directing gave me freedom and respect that acting auditions never offered.”
Today, Director Pink is one of the most sought-after music video directors in Nigeria, known for her vibrant visuals and work with leading Afrobeats stars. She used her story to inspire young creatives, urging them to stay patient and focused in their craft.
“Success doesn’t come overnight,” she said. “Those who are at the top today went through years of hard work and setbacks. You have to embrace delayed gratification to truly grow.”
