DJ Speedsta Delivers Optimistic Take On SA Hip Hop: “We’re Here to Fix the Country.” In an energetic and optimistic conversation on the popular Maftown Heights platform, veteran South African DJ and hip hop tastemaker DJ Speedsta firmly rejected claims that the local hip hop scene is in trouble. Instead, he positioned the culture as one standing on the edge of an even bigger breakthrough.

Speaking in a lively and forward-looking interview on the popular platform Maftown Heights, Speedsta addressed ongoing debates about the state of South African hip hop. When asked bluntly, “What is wrong with SA Hip Hop?” the influential DJ did not hesitate in his response. “There’s nothing wrong with SA Hip hop at the moment. We’re here to fix the country, that’s why we are here.”
The respected radio personality, who also hosts the Up To Speed podcast and 5 Hip Hop Nights on 5FM, framed the genre’s current position as one filled with potential rather than decline. According to Speedsta, the conversation should shift from diagnosing problems to amplifying ambition, collaboration, and consistency.
He stressed that sustained effort and unity across the industry are key to pushing the culture forward. “We got to keep pushing, keep making the hits,” he said. “And get more shows, get more deals, more collaborations, more partners helping us out. So I don’t think there’s anything wrong with SA Hip Hop, I just think we need to do a bit more, we need to dominate the charts. Yeah, man, let’s have a big 2026.”
His comments land at a critical time for the genre. Across social media, podcasts, and industry panels, conversations have intensified around legacy acts, the responsibility of emerging artists, chart performance, and commercial visibility. Early 2026 has seen only a limited number of SA hip-hop records maintaining strong rotation on major radio charts, while broader discussions continue around royalties, media backing, and access within the industry.
Rather than focusing on these challenges as setbacks, Speedsta highlighted them as opportunities for growth. He emphasised the importance of live performances, strategic partnerships, and a renewed focus on creating high-quality music that resonates both locally and beyond.
