During a recent appearance on The Inside Show, hosted by George Avakian and presented by Johnnie Walker Africa, Speedsta offered insight into the philosophy guiding his fast-growing podcast, Up To Speed.
Launched in early 2026, Up To Speed has quickly carved out its lane within SA hip-hop media. The podcast dives into conversations about artist branding, industry dynamics, and the state of the culture, with contributions from co-hosts such as Fif_laaa and Okayswisher. Rather than chasing viral soundbites, Speedsta is focused on depth and honest dialogue.
He revealed that the show was born from real, off-the-record conversations with artists he considers friends. Reflecting on a lengthy call with rapper 25K, Speedsta explained how those exchanges sparked something bigger. “So with this show specifically (Up To Speed Podcast), I have friends, and I was on a call with 25K for a long and we had our conversation, and it was so good. I have so many friends in this thing who are rappers and so forth,” he shared.
For Speedsta, the key lies in balancing critique with care. He made it clear that thoughtful engagement matters more than controversy. “So, with Up To Speed, I’m very intentional with it. I said to myself, find ways to talk about these things, critique these things, but in a manner that won’t necessarily hurt anybody. That was my thinking and approach,” he said.
His approach also draws a firm line against empty chatter. “So I’m really, really trying to be intentional about like we’re not here to talk nonsense. But we need to broadcast the culture.”
At a time when conversations around SA hip-hop often veer into division and sensationalism, Speedsta’s measured tone stands out.
