DJ Speedsta Responds To Criticism Over Supporting New Talent In SA Hip Hop. DJ Speedsta has addressed critics who accuse him of ignoring emerging artists in his sets. The Johannesburg-based DJ and producer, known for chart-topping collaborations and a strong radio presence, took to X (formerly Twitter) to challenge claims that he favours older tracks over new talent.

The debate started after a post from user @YandaMhlamvu criticised what they saw as a lack of support for upcoming artists. The post read: “Besides the rich kids, the other artists that aren’t rich didn’t get much help in order to get a breakthrough. Speedsta is one of the DJs who would rather play old classics instead of putting on the kids. Not saying there’s anything wrong playing classics, but uplift the kids too.”
Speedsta responded sharply, “98% of the people that say ‘I’m old, play old music etc’ have never even heard me play!

Stop making excuses about everything to entertain a narrative. You’ve probably never heard me DJ in your life. Stop the Cap!
.”
His response reflects ongoing discussions in the South African music scene about the balance between celebrating classic hits and giving exposure to new artists. Speedsta, who has collaborated with names such as AKA, Yung Swiss, and DJ Tira, maintains that much of the criticism is based on assumptions rather than firsthand experience.
The conversation drew a mix of reactions online. Some users continued to challenge him, while others defended him. User @yungdontrust wrote, “I’ve heard you play Speedsta, you play old music.”
Supportive voices were also present. User @rollxcxstro commented, “People just hate you Speedy lol,” suggesting the criticism may stem from general negativity rather than factual concerns.
Speedsta’s career reflects his efforts to bridge generations of music fans. Rising from Johannesburg, he has earned recognition as a DJ and tastemaker, blending classic tracks with contemporary sounds. His radio shows on Metro FM and performances at major festivals frequently feature a range of music from golden-era hip-hop to current Amapiano hits. Industry insiders note that DJs often face challenges when selecting playlists, as these choices can influence which artists gain exposure.
This is not Speedsta’s first confrontation with public debate. Over the years, he has dealt with controversies and industry disputes, emerging as a figure advocating authenticity in the music scene. His recent post underscores the idea that assumptions can spread quickly online, but genuine talent is best judged in person.
