Don boost for Cavaliers

Speedster Donovan Don will be back for the Boland Cavaliers as they look to continue their dream run in this year’s Currie Cup.

Going into their round 6 clash against the Sharks, Boland currently sit atop the standings alongside the Free State Cheetahs on 21 points with just one loss in their five matches so far.

Blitzbok Don missed the 29-26 win over the Pumas at the Mbombela Stadium due to a knee injury. He underwent a series of fitness tests on Tuesday and was declared fit for selection for Saturday’s clash in Pietermaritzburg.

Boland’s comeback victory is still the talk of the Currie Cup. Trailing 21-3 at half time and briefly down to 13 men due to two yellow cards, the Cavaliers responded in spectacular fashion.

Right wing Marcqiewn Titus and left wing Xavier Mitchell sparked the second-half revival, while tighthead prop Dayan van der Westhuizen and a penalty try in the final minutes sealed a historic first away victory.

“The team showed incredible character,” said coach Hawies Fourie. “Coming back from an 18-point deficit with only 13 men on the field at one stage is massive for our playoff credentials.”

Fourie has an interesting selection dilemma on his hands. Flyhalf Ashlon Davids has been ruled out of the trip to KZN with a knee injury, which means Don could be moved to fullback instead of the on the wing, with James Tedder then having to fill in at pivot in Davids’ absence.

The other alternative would be to switch centre Juan Mostert to flyhalf, but Fourie will give more clarity to that when he names his team on Thursday.

Don remains the Currie Cup’s leading try scorer so far, with seven five-pointers.
