Dupont: I still have a lot of work to do

Antoine Dupont says he’s finally starting to see light at the end of the tunnel as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury that ruled him out since March.

The France and Toulouse captain confirmed that his rehabilitation is on track and that he’s targeting a return to action by “the end of November, beginning of December.”

“It’s getting better and better,” Dupont told Canal+ during the 10th anniversary of the Canal Rugby Club. “The road is long and tedious, but I’m making progress little by little. I’ll have about two more months before playing again, if all goes well between now and then.”

Dupont tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee on in March this year – an injury that brought his season to a grinding halt. The scrumhalf admits the early stages of rehab were some of the toughest of his career.

“The first few months, there wasn’t much rugby, unfortunately,” he said.

“A lot of gym, physiotherapy, weight training, to regain strength. It wasn’t very fun. Obviously, when you watch matches, it makes you want to come back, but in good conditions.”

The 27-year-old has repeatedly stressed that he won’t rush his comeback, even as Toulouse press ahead in the Top 14.

“I still have a lot of steps to take,” Dupont said.

“We’ll see how they go, but it will be around the end of November, beginning of December. I still have a lot of work to do to get back to my best.”

As for what remains, Dupont says the focus is on regaining full leg strength and confidence.

“It’s mainly strengthening the quadriceps, to be as comfortable as possible in my movements and prevent pain. The stronger my thigh muscles are, the less pain there is in my knee. And after that, it’s just about spending time on the pitch, getting back into the swing of things.”

While sidelined, Dupont will continue to support his teammates as Toulouse host Union Bordeaux-Bègles in the Top 14.
