Ex-Cheetahs lock to coach Sous in Japan

Struggling Japanese League One side, Honda Heat, has bolstered its coaching staff with a former Cheetahs skyscraper for the new domestic season.

According to RugbyJP.com on X, Izak van der Westhuizen will link up with head coach Kieran Crowley as his assistant as they look to turn the Heat’s fortunes around. The Heat produced a series of lukewarm performances and ended second from bottom last season, with just four wins from their 18 league matches.

There is already a South African connection, with Springbok lock Franco Mostert playing for the club. But van der Westhuizen will also be working with the likes of Argentinian hardman Pablo Matera and new signing Tevita Ikanivere.

Before taking on the job in Japan, van der Westhuizen had been the Cheetahs head coach between 2023 and the start of this year when he then handed over the reins to Frans Steyn.

The new League One season gets under way on the 13th of December.
