Asante Africa Foundation is actively driving this impact across East Africa by expanding access to education and equipping young people with the skills they need to succeed. Through its scholarship and leadership development programs, Asante Africa supports students from underserved communities in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, to enable them to stay in school, pursue their ambitions, and contribute meaningfully to their families and communities.

Our Models for African Scholarships

Asante Africa works with a holistic scholarship model to ensure that a majority of students in East Africa get a bite of the cake. There is the full African Scholarship that covers tuition and exam fees, participation in school activities and workshops, accommodation and meals, learning materials such as books and digital tools, and basic essentials including uniforms and hygiene supplies.

Asante Africa also provides the “Get Started” or “One-Time” scholarships, which focus on supplying essential learning materials, school fees, and basic items needed to begin the school year. This ensures that students can start strong, even if they are not yet on full scholarships.

Moreover, all of these scholarships are paired with mentorship, leadership development, and life skills training, to ensure that students are not only educated but also prepared for the future.

The impact of this approach is clear. In 2024 alone, over 400 students benefited from both full and starter scholarships. Since 2007, nearly 3,000 scholarships have been awarded, contributing to a 100 per cent transition rate from primary to secondary school among supported students and a 79 per cent progression rate to higher education, which is well above the national average.

Where Opportunity Begins

For many beneficiaries, access to education is uncertain until intervention arrives.

Grace’s journey is an example of such. After losing her mother and facing significant financial hardship, her chances of staying in school were slim. Receiving a scholarship through Asante Africa changed everything.

“I am so happy that my life has changed. I know I will achieve my dream of becoming a teacher.”

With school fees, supplies, and essential support covered, Grace was able to focus on her education. Her confidence grew, her performance improved, and her future became clearer.

Similarly, students like Robinah and Naomi have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership and have proven that when given the right opportunity, young Africans can thrive and lead.

The Ripple Effect on Families and Communities

The impact of a scholarship does not stop at graduation, nor at the individual recipient. It becomes a shared benefit.

Many beneficiaries return to their communities with skills in entrepreneurship, leadership, and problem-solving. Some start businesses, others enter the workforce and many take on mentorship roles, as well as support their families financially.

Beneficiaries like Alifunce have gone beyond academic success to build sustainable livelihoods. After receiving support, he ventured into poultry farming, eventually growing it into a profitable business that supports his household and contributes to his local economy.

Sharon, another beneficiary who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Nursing and Midwifery, supports her family by teaching them healthy practices and aims to one day open her own healthcare practice to serve her community.

Similarly, Prudence received a scholarship from Asante Africa Foundation to study Software Development at Akirachix Kenya. She is now using the skills and knowledge gained to generate income, support her siblings, and empower other girls in her community.

This ripple effect shows how African scholarships extend far beyond the individual. By empowering students like Sharon and Prudence, scholarships create leaders, innovators and role models who uplift families, inspire peers and contribute to local development.
