Jay Jody Calls For A Colourful Rebirth Of SA Hip Hop. Jay Jody used a recent appearance on The Element Podcast to deliver a thoughtful, wide-ranging plea for South African hip hop to loosen its chokehold on creativity and make room for artists to age into their art.
The rapper framed his wish as a call for variety, longevity, and generosity from fans and industry gatekeepers alike. “My one wish for hip hop? It’s for it to be colourful again. Like I said earlier, I used to have like 10 favourite rappers, but right now it has become such a culty thing, like there’s like one person at a time or whatever. For it not to be aged so quickly,” Jay Jody said.
“We should let our rappers grow inside of rap and express themselves as 30-year-olds, 40-year-olds, 50-year-olds. Other genres dont age their favourite artists. So why do we do it? There’s so much we can offer as we grow. So, for it to be more colourful, have different characters, and for it to not age so quickly, so it can be there forever, and the people who grow it can express themselves in that growth,” he added.
Jody’s comments read like a plea for diversity across sound, style and career arcs. He argues that the problem is not a lack of talent, but a culture that too quickly writes artists off once they leave the youth spotlight. Where other genres celebrate the ways singers and bands mature, he said hip hop often treats ageing as the end of relevance rather than the start of new creative possibilities.
He pushed for a rethink by fans, industry figures and tastemakers: create space for different voices, reward longevity and let artists experiment without fear of being discarded. If that happens, Jody believes South African hip hop could become forever music, a scene where names stick because they continue to surprise and resonate across life stages.
