A raft of injuries and a winless Currie Cup campaign with one game to go, could see some of the Stormers’ URC players released to help Western Province secure victory over the Boland Cavaliers on Saturday.

Labeeb Levy’s side suffered a heavy 39-13 loss to the Pumas in Cape Town on Saturday – their sixth on the trot – making sure they’ll end the competition firmly in possession of the wooden spoon. They only have one more chance to ensure that they don’t go through the competition without a win, but that’ll be a tough ask against the Cavaliers who are firm favourites to go all the way.
“We must do our best to get a win. It’ll turn into a tough ask if our neighbours start becoming negative, but we need to think of all the positives that’ll flow out of a win in our last game on Saturday.”

The Lions named several of their URC stars in their match-23 against the Vodacom Bulls in their Jukskei derby on Saturday, which paid rich dividends. Levy feels other teams will go that way as well and that they would also need to think along those lines.
“It’s quite obvious what the big teams across the country are planning. There will most likely be a step in the same direction. We’ll have to look at it strategically because WP is a proud rugby union and we want to see that our teams do well. We are looking for solutions.”
Saturday’s loss to the Pumas also took its toll on personnel. Hooker Scarra Ntubeni and centre Damian Markus both picked up leg injuries, while scrumhalf Ezekiel Ngobeni hobbled off in the second half due to a suspected knee injury.
WP host a Boland side who have lost just two of their six matches in the competition so far and who are intent on hosting a semi-final at their fortress in Wellington.
