Playmaker Kade Wolhuter is relishing the opportunity to renew hostilities with the Sharks XV when the Lions host the 2024 Currie Cup final at Ellis Park on Saturday.
The 23-year-old is set to make his first appearance in the showpiece of rugby’s oldest competition, and sees it as a grudge match after the Lions’ only defeat this season came at the hands of the Sharks.
Wolhuter, who joined the Pride in 2023 after battling injuries at the DHL Stormers, has found new life in Johannesburg. “It’s been a great move for me,” was quoted by Rugby365, reflecting on his time with the Lions.
“I found my circles, found my people so I’m really enjoying it.”

Looking ahead to this week’s clash, the Paul Roos Gymnasium alum added, “We need to start better than last weekend. We’ve had a very successful season thus far with the one loss to the Sharks, so it’s a bit of a grudge match.
“We know the Sharks will bring everything they have, they are a great side, a physical side so we just need to front up and match them.
“The Sharks obviously played 100 minutes last weekend. But it’s a Currie Cup final, they will be up for it. That was last week’s issue and they will be coming for us”
Wolhuter also credits the Lions’ strong run to the blend of youth and experience. “There’s a belief in the group that we can win. We’re playing for each other, for our coaches.
“To be in a Currie Cup final is unbelievable – it will be my first one.”
