Lions to unleash ‘wild dog’ on Dragons

The Lions will be without two Springboks for Saturday’s Vodacom URC match against the Dragons at Ellis Park.

Scrumhalf Morné van den Berg picked up a leg injury in last week’s clash against Edinburgh and left the field shortly after half-time.

Netwerk24 reports that the 28-year-old was absent from training on Thursday, and the Lions are expected to start Nico Steyn at scrumhalf, with Haashim Pead on the bench.

The hosts will also be without tighthead prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye, who will have his hearing this week after testing positive for a banned substance last year.

RF Schoeman is in line to take over the No 3 jersey, with the Lions’ coaching staff backing the 22-year-old to step up.

“Asenathi is very important to us. He brings physicality and also leadership to the team,” said Lions scrum coach Julian Redelinghuys.

“But when he is not here, the other guys have to take advantage of the opportunity they get. That is the only way the young guys grow.

“RF is a young prop who has played in many matches. He is still learning in every match,” Redelinghuys added.

“The set-pieces are the part of his game in which he still needs to learn the most; in the loose he plays like a wild dog.”
