Lynn Forbes Recounts Shock Of Seeing AKA’s Murder Footage During Madlanga Commission Broadcast. Lynn Forbes, mother of slain South African rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, shared the harrowing moment she unexpectedly relived the night her son was gunned down while simply tuning in for highlights of the ongoing Madlanga Commission.
Forbes recounted settling in to watch the commission’s proceedings, a public inquiry into criminality, political interference, and corruption in South Africa’s criminal justice system. Like many South Africans following the high-profile hearings, she was catching the recaps when a witness’s testimony took a sudden, graphic turn.
“They said, if you are a sensitive viewer, you must turn off. They said they are going to screen a murder,” Forbes told host L-Tido. Confident she could handle it, she said, “I’m not sensitive. I can probably deal with it.” She kept watching. What came next shattered her: the CCTV footage of her son’s assassination outside a Durban restaurant in February 2023.
“I was watching my child being shot on TV,” she said, her voice carrying the weight of that unforeseen blow. Forbes had long avoided the widely circulated video of AKA’s murder. She had even confided in L-Tido previously that she had never brought herself to watch it. In the days after Kiernan’s death, she revealed, she even had a poignant dream in which her son gently encouraged her: “Mom, you should watch the video, it’s not that bad, you know.”
When she finally did view it privately, the experience was gut-wrenching but brought a sliver of clarity. “It was really difficult to watch. But for me, it was like, did he die instantly? I just needed to know it was quick.” From that angle, it appeared the end had come swiftly, an answer her mother’s heart desperately sought amid the unimaginable pain.
Yet nothing prepared her for the commission’s broadcast. The footage aired from a different perspective during the testimony, catching her completely off guard. “I promise you, it was the last thing I expected to see while watching the Madlanga Commission,” she said. “It was just the whole shooting. I was traumatised. I screamed, and I was in tears.”
Lynn Forbes described the visceral reaction: the sudden flood of grief, the screams echoing in her home, the tears that followed. Remarkably, she added that she felt composed again shortly afterwards, but the shock lingered. “It was very traumatising, and I was wondering. I wish they said they are gonna show the AKA murder, then probably I wouldn’t have watched it.”
Her account echoes the outrage expressed by AKA’s father, Tony Forbes, who formally complained to the commission after the footage was played during Sergeant Fannie Nkosi’s testimony. Critics, including the family, have questioned whether displaying the full graphic clip was necessary for the proceedings or whether less intrusive alternatives, such as still images, could have sufficed.
The Madlanga Commission, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, continues to probe deep-seated issues in law enforcement and justice. For the Forbes family, however, these hearings have become yet another painful chapter in their long search for answers and accountability surrounding Kiernan’s unsolved murder, which also claimed the life of his friend, celebrity chef Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane.
