In a revealing moment of honesty, one of South Africa’s most cinematic rap voices has opened up about a long-brewing collaborative project with fellow lyricist 25K, framing it as a deeply personal reset that has been quietly unfolding for years.
In a recent interview, Maglera Doe Boy said the still-untitled project traces its roots to their time working with DJ Sliqe on the Champion Music series, including Volumes 1 and 2. While those releases established a strong creative bond and curatorial direction, both artists were left wanting something more personal and fully self-defined.
“We felt like there was already a structure built around Sliqe’s vision, and we wanted something that belongs entirely to us,” Maglera explained. “If we decide who curates, then we decide the sound.”
The concept appears to be largely driven by Maglera himself. Earlier remarks from 25K in separate interviews indicate he is the leading creative force behind the project, a role that reflects his identity as a visual thinker.
“I’m a visual thinker, and that comes from spending years directing without releasing music,” he said. That time away from dropping solo material was far from quiet. It allowed him to sharpen his creative lens, envisioning not just lyrics and production, but the full sensory experience of the project.
For now, details remain tightly guarded, with no official title or release date confirmed. What is clear, however, is the level of commitment behind the work.
“All I know is that for the rest of the year, my friend and I are going to make music,” Maglera said, addressing supporters. “That is why I went to the mountains where the Sotho people come from.”
The mention of the mountains carries a deeper meaning. By returning to the ancestral landscapes of the Sotho heartland, Maglera is tapping into something beyond inspiration. It suggests a search for clarity, cultural grounding, and a raw creative energy that comes from both isolation and heritage.
