United are actively searching for reinforcements between the posts after a shaky start to the season. Altay Bayindir has struggled to convince in the Premier League, while Andre Onana came under heavy criticism for his costly errors during the club’s Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town.
According to transfer reports from The Sun UK, United have now made a fresh approach for Martinez, who has long been on their radar.
The Argentina international, 32, sparked speculation about his future after seemingly bidding farewell to Villa supporters at the end of last season. However, despite interest from several clubs, a move away from Villa Park has yet to materialise.
Martinez, who missed the opening-day defeat to Newcastle due to suspension, returned in Villa’s narrow 1-0 loss to Brentford. The World Cup-winning goalkeeper signed a new contract with the club just a year ago, a deal that ties him to Villa until 2028.
Reports earlier this summer from ESPN suggested that Martinez was eager to join United and become the club’s new first-choice keeper. The Red Devils even tested Villa’s resolve with a loan offer, which was swiftly rejected.
