A spirited discussion unfolded within South African hip hop circles this week after a fan-shared statistic sparked a candid but ultimately respectful exchange between two figures connected to rapper A-Reece.

The debate began when a fan account posted numbers highlighting the producers who have worked most frequently with A-Reece.

According to the post, producer Michael Tuohy leads with 53 collaborations, followed closely by MashBeatz with 50. The post then posed a question to fans: Which A-Reece era did you prefer?

Rapper Ex Global, a former collaborator in the scene, soon chimed in with a sharp but humorous take. Referring to A-Reece’s earlier work with MashBeatz, especially the widely loved 2017 track “Meanwhile in Honeydew”, Ex Global joked: “Harry Potter was given 53 chances, and nothing crossed over to be as big as Meanwhile in Honeydew at least? Can slimes please get the boy to call Mash? This is ridiculous.”

The “Harry Potter” remark appeared to be a playful nickname aimed at Tuohy, poking fun at the large number of collaborations while suggesting that none had matched the cultural impact of MashBeatz’s production during A-Reece’s early rise. Tracks from that period are still remembered by many fans for their raw energy and defining role in building Reece’s early momentum.

Michael Tuohy responded directly, defending his work while maintaining respect for fellow producers in the scene.

“I’ve always had respect for Mash, Flvme and Zoocci, and I always will because they’ve definitely inspired me to get to where I am,” he wrote. “This video is proof I didn’t just come out of nowhere looking for a handout like you make it seem.”

Ex Global quickly clarified that his comment was meant in good humour and issued an apology while also praising Tuohy’s work.

“Geez, Michael, sorry, hey. I thought it’s a safe space to have an opinion just like everybody else. My sense of humour can be wild sometimes, and you know this. But you are a great producer. The stats just shocked me, Potter, that’s all. Enjoy your Sunday, buddy. You get them, Tiger.”

The brief exchange quickly drew attention from A-Reece’s fanbase, often referred to as “slimes,” and reignited the ongoing debate about the rapper’s different creative eras. Some fans continue to champion the MashBeatz period for its gritty, anthemic sound and lasting cultural moments, particularly with tracks like “Meanwhile in Honeydew.” Others highlight the consistency and sonic growth that has come through A-Reece’s extensive collaborations with Tuohy in recent years.

Neither A-Reece nor MashBeatz has publicly commented on the discussion. Still, the interaction reflects the passionate nature of South African hip hop communities where statistics, nostalgia and humour often collide while the music continues to take centre stage.
