MLR to continue despite club exits

Major League Rugby has reaffirmed its commitment to continue next season and beyond, even as the North American competition faces major structural changes.

Three teams – the New Orleans Gold, Miami Sharks and Houston SaberCats – have announced their departure from the league, while the San Diego Legion and Rugby Football Club Los Angeles will merge to form a new franchise, California Legion.

In a statement, MLR described the off-season as a period of “reflection and tough choices.”

“Running a professional league is complex, and while the departure of teams was not something we anticipated, it has provided an opportunity to reset and strengthen our foundation,” the league said.

The recent exits have raised concerns about rugby’s professional landscape in the United States, especially with the country set to host the men’s Rugby World Cup in 2031 and the women’s tournament two years later.

Despite the turbulence, MLR insists its future remains secure.

“Today, we’re confirming Major League Rugby will be played in 2026 and beyond,” the statement continued.

“We are engaged in active discussions with new partners, ownership groups, and the USRPA to build long-term alignment and stability that will serve the league well into the future.”

The league will continue with seven teams following the club departures and the California merger.
