Morgan: ‘I love the Ospreys’

Wales captain Jac Morgan has made his allegiance clear, declaring his “love” for the Ospreys as his regional side faces an uncertain future under the Welsh Rugby Union’s restructuring plans.

The WRU last week confirmed its intention to grant just three professional licences from next season — one for Cardiff, one in the east, and one in the west – effectively putting Swansea-based Ospreys and Llanelli’s Scarlets in a fight for survival.

That announcement has reignited talk of a possible merger between the two west Wales rivals, and left Ospreys supporters fearing the region could vanish altogether.

For Morgan, who has been linked with a move to Saracens, his heart remains in Swansea.

“I love the Ospreys,” the 25-year-old flanker said on Tuesday, speaking alongside new Wales head coach Steve Tandy. “I love playing there, I love the boys, the coaches and everyone.

“The news only came out on Friday, so the main focus for myself is this campaign and we’ll see how everything else goes.”

Ospreys fans were told at a recent forum that if the region ceased to exist, Morgan would have no choice but to continue his club career outside Wales.

The WRU’s restructuring announcement comes just as Tandy begins his tenure in charge of Wales, who face Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and world champions South Africa in November.

Morgan said players had responded admirably to the uncertainty.

“It’s a different situation, but the players have been good in the way they’ve reacted,” he said.

“We address it but also we’ve got the opportunity now with the learnings and the new coaches coming in to focus on the upcoming games.”
