Lions Currie Cup coach Mziwakhe Nkosi admits he gave his players the hairdryer treatment after their defeat to the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.
Nkosi reportedly used “colourful language” in the change room after the 47-31 loss on 23 August, which contributed to him being reined in by his employers.
Lions URC coach Ivan van Rooyen has since taken charge of the Currie Cup side for the rest of the competition.
According to the union, Nkosi coached the team “alongside” Van Rooyen this week and was in the coaches’ box at Ellis Park for the Lions’ 44-5 win against the Vodacom Bulls.
However, Nkosi’s regular support staff – Wessel Roux and Wynand Ellis – were absent, replaced by Van Rooyen’s assistants Ricardo Loubscher, Barend Pieterse and Jaque Fourie, as well as Van Rooyen himself.
“It stands to reason that if you play like we did against the Cheetahs a coach will share how he really feels,” Nkosi said of his post-match reaction in Bloemfontein. “Hopefully that is not only reserved for one Johan Erasmus and hopefully a coach can share his feelings.
“We were not in a World Cup, but for us the Currie Cup is an important competition and if the team doesn’t perform we will share our feelings.”

Nkosi, who also works with the Lions junior teams, spent a long Saturday in the coaches’ box for three matches – including the U19s’ 42-28 win and the U21s’ 78-28 victory against the Cheetahs.
“I also know where my place is in the franchise,” he added. “It was a long day for me today. Last year I coached all three teams to the final, and the U19 team won their league.”
