Nota Revisits His Warning About Cotton Fest As Festival Comes To An End. Organisers of Cotton Fest announced on Tuesday that the youth-focused music and culture festival founded by the late Riky Rick will not return under its current structure, bringing an end to a seven-year run that helped spotlight a generation of South African artists.

The decision, the statement said, follows internal disputes among shareholders and a divergence of long-term vision that made it impossible to continue the festival in a way that honoured the standards set by its founder.

“I told you so, RIP Cotton Fest… You played your part,” said veteran music commentator and industry figure Nota, echoing a longer critique he made years earlier on the Nkululeko and Culture Podcast.

“So you get to that level, then you become a Riky Rick, and you are famous, and people love your songs, and then you start your Cotton Fest because you got white friends that got an idea that needs a black face to commercialise it.

“Therefore, you can die, and the Cotton Fest will continue because it’s owned by these white people who were using you so that they can get all these black artists on their lineup for free. So now you have to keep up that pretence and it becomes a noose around your neck.” The comments, first reported in 2022 and resurfacing across social feeds after Tuesday’s announcement, have been widely shared and debated.

Organisers said the festival’s legacy will not disappear completely. While Cotton Fest will not continue as a ticketed festival, the team confirmed that the Cotton Fest Creative Programme will live on to support young creatives and provide opportunities across the year. Current ticket holders have been told they may request refunds through the ticketing partner.
