Plum: I’m not going anywhere

Amid the uncertainty in Durban, former head coach John Plumtree insists he’s still part of the Sharks setup.

Speaking to Netwerk24 after the Sharks’ defeat to Toulouse, Plumtree confirmed that he has voluntarily stepped aside to allow JP Pietersen to take full control of the side, but plans to continue contributing behind the scenes.

PLUM: My battery has been drained

“It’s just a case of me stepping aside and JP allowing him to make his mark,” Plumtree said.

“I probably realised a few weeks ago that the best thing for the Sharks would be for me to step aside and allow JP to take over. I’m here to support him and help the Sharks grow, hopefully for the next couple of years.”

Plumtree stressed that while he is no longer head coach, discussions about his long-term role within the organisation are ongoing.

“I don’t really know yet what my future holds,” he said. “Marco Masotti, the controlling owner of the Sharks, and I are in discussions and I want to stay and fill a different role at the team.”

His desire to remain in Durban is deeply personal.

“I love Durban, I love South Africa and South Africans. My wife is a South African and one of my sons was also born in South Africa. Therefore, I hope my future keeps me in Durban.”
