Premier League introduce body cameras for referees in football games

The English Premier League have confirmed the introduction of a body camera for the referee in the game between Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

The centre referee of the game, Jarred Gillett will use a head-mounted device called a ‘RefCam’, although the footage will not be broadcast live. The video will be used in a one-off programme providing insight into officiating in the Premier League.

The camera was used in the Bundesliga when referee Daniel Schlager wore a camera and microphone during the game between Frankfurt and Wolfsburg. The footage of the game was used for a programme called ‘Referees Mic’d up – Bundesliga’.

However, this is not the first time that a Premier League referee will wear a video camera. Rob Jones wore a camera for a 2023 Summer Series match between Chelsea and Brighton in Philadelphia.
