“Healing myself, I’m breaking cycles of trauma and nurturing a foundation of love and resilience within my children”. In partnership with local businesses, the Gauteng Department of Social Development recently organized a welcoming program for a recovered drug addict mother. The campaign was hosted at 2154 Umlilo Street, Protea Glen, Ext 4, Soweto, on 09 Thursday 2025.
The Gauteng Department of Social Development’s drug awareness campaign mission is to eradicate the distribution of drugs in the Province. To achieve this goal, the department is willing to work with law enforcement, the Private sector, and community members. This welcoming program meant that Thandeka Ndobe would receive a refurbished house for her and her strangled children due to drugs. It was a joyful yet emotional moment for this 37-year-old mother who spent the festive season in the rehabilitation center in Nigel without celebrating it with her beloved family.
As a Recovered drug addict mother Mrs. Thandeka Ndobe said, “With a hurt voice, she expressed how alcohol and drugs ruined her life, and how that negatively impacted her children’s lives and the pain they had to endure from community members who abused them by calling them children of druggies. She vowed never to go back to substances, and expressed how her body now feels differently, that sobriety can be a wonderful feeling”.
Things got out of control after the death of his husband, meaning she had to take care of everything as a single parent, this burden was too much to carry, so she opened up to her friends as a shoulder to cry on, that was a turning point and a way of been introduced to drugs. This affected her health and her children started to suffer as she would sell stuff at home to buy drugs to get high to forget her problems. The house became a hot spot for drug users and criminal activities and the environment was not safe for her children’s lives and this affected them academically and health-wise.
As the Acting Head of the Gauteng Department of Social Development, Mr. Bongani Ngomane said, “I commented on Ndobe for taking a brave step for the sake of her children’s future. We thank Ndone for her resilience and for returning home to start a new life in her community with her children. As the department, we are proud of social workers for stepping in and referring Ndobe to the rehabilitation Centre.”
This was a life-changing moment for this family. They didn’t spend Christmas together, but now, they can recover the lost time and focus on the future as one. Community members came to welcome and celebrate with her and her children in their newly renovated house.
